Look at the size of that thing! Its a Cat-5 cyclone on par with Katrina.

If those numbers were verified by official forecast agencies, they would place Phailin on par with 2005s Hurricane Katrina, and break !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! for the most intense cyclone in Indian Ocean recorded history.
As of 8 p.m. Friday, India time, Phailin had indeed !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! with an intensity of 918mb and sustained winds of 160 mph (260 kph). That ties the wind speed record set by the 1999 cyclone at its peak, currently the most intense storm ever to make landfall in India.

What is scary is that part of the world is even less ready to deal with something like that than New Orleans. Best wishes for the folks in the area.

The US would send an Air Craft Carrier to be a support/mobile hospital to help out India....but the government is shut down at the moment, check back next week.

Thankfully there has been a 48hr advance notice. So the govt has moved emergency personnel and the army to help. Infrastructure though, is definitely not on par with the US. This area of the country always gets hit every year with cyclones from the Bay causing routine loss of life and property.

India has its own carrier now. I guess they're on their own.

The IN has had a carrier since '57 I think. The navy and coast guard have been positioned to assist in case they're needed acc to the newspapers.
